Windows Server 2008 Cache Management
1 min read - Mar 28, 2011Or, “How explorer.exe used all my server’s RAM and caused it to die” One of my clients was experiencing slowdown of their AD server due to explorer.exe consuming 100% of the RAM. I say slowdown, with that sort of RAM usage the thing ground to a halt and had to either be restarted or have explorer.exe killed (if we were lucky enough to be able to get to the task manager).

Rooting and Cleaning out the Orange crap - Orange San Francisco
2 min read - Mar 22, 2011WARNING Please check whether your phone is a G1 San Fran or a G2. You can do this by downloading Ask Mr Pigfish from the Android market. If it’s a G2, following the instructions below will brick your phone. So don’t skip this part ok? The Rooting I used this excellent guide to root and clean out my Orange San Francisco. Basically it takes place in three parts: Unlock your San  Francisco (Ridiculously easy) Root your San Francisco using Universal Androot (in the guide above).

New Scientist article limit
1 min read - Feb 19, 2010The New Scientist website has recently started imposing an article limit for non-paying users. As anyone with any familiarity with JS and jQuery (which, the New Scientist webmasters kindly already supplied) would do, I coded a little bookmarklet to get rid of this annoyance. javascript:$('#haasOverlay’).hide();javascript:$('#fadeBackground’).hide(); To use it, just create a new bookmark in your browser and paste the text above as the URL. When presented with the article limit block, simply open the bookmark and the block will vanish!

Brookes PIP skin
1 min read - Feb 7, 2010I got bored of how the Brookes Personal Information Portal looked. So I decided to code a little plugin for Google Chrome to make it look a bit prettier. Took about 6 hours as the page was so old that it was done with no CSS or XHTML whatsoever; tables and in-line formatting all the way. Still, with the help of jQuery’s traversing functions I was able to overhaul it quite easily.

Reading list for Oxford Brookes Philosophy 09
5 min read - Oct 5, 2009I figured this was as good a place as any for me to post random crap about my first year of Philosophy at Brookes. There are four modules in each semester of the first year, two core philosophy and two which can be anything you like. I went with the basic setup of Philosophy, Religion and Politics, though I dare say I’ll switch Politics to Psychology at some point as it’s boring the tits off me so far.

Streaming multiple UK Freeview channels on a single Ubuntu computer
6 min read - Aug 7, 2009I was recently given the challenge of setting up an IP-TV system for a school’s accommodation block, approximately 40 rooms. Initially I was very skeptical about the whole affair, even working on the assumption that all the kids had laptops (which was a fair one as they’re all rich kids) my last soireé into streaming video was back in 2003 using the then embryonic shoutcast video support at approximately 160kbps.
